Man injured, sheep killed in tiger attack

 A man was injured and three sheep were killed in a tiger attack at Haralahalli hamlet in Hediyala forest area in the taluk on Thursday.

The injured has been identified as Sannaiah who is being treated at Swami Vivekananda Hospital at Sargur.

According to the villagers, a tiger had been spotted frequently in villages under Hediyala and Nugu Beerwal range in the Biligiri Ranga Temple reserve for the past one month. On Thursday, a youth Munia was grazing sheep on the fringes of the forest, when a tiger pounced on the animals.

The startled youth rushed into the village and alerted the residents. By the time they reached the spot, the tiger had killed a sheep and was feeding on it. Seeing the crowd, it ran and hid itself in a nearby bush.

When the commotion increased, the tiger emerged from the bush and attacked the crowd, leaving Sannaiah injured on the back and other parts of the body.

Following the demand by the villagers, the Forest department officials promised to place a cage at the spot on Friday morning. The forest department personnel are camping there.
The locals pointed out that Nagaraju of Vadayanapura village was killed in a tiger attack on October 13.

Attack on shepherd

A shepherd, Mahadevaiah, was attacked on October 26. A bullock belonging to Chikkanna was attacked on October 29. It had killed and consumed a cow belonging to taluk panchayat former president Siddamma on October 30.

The efforts of the Forest department to trap the tiger earlier proved futile.

Woman injured in bear attack

A woman was injured in a bear attack at Basapura village in the taluk on Thursday.
The victim is Mahadevamma, wife of Gopala Nayaka. She was walking to her farm at 11 am on Thursday, when a bear hiding in a roadside bush pounced on her.

When Mahadevamma screamed out of fear, those working on nearby fields rushed to her rescue and drove the bear away. Mahadevamma suffered injuries on her arms and body and is being treated at the town hospital.

MLA S Chikkamadu visited the spot and inquired about her health condition.
