Book release, cultural events

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday condemned the atrocities being committed against children and said that due to  such acts, the society had to hang its head in shame.

Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of a two-day flower show at Cubbon Park by the Horticulture department to mark Children’s Day, Siddaramaiah said, “Those committing the atrocities and sexually exploiting children are not humans, but monsters.

We should not allow such incidents to happen. Efforts should be made by parents, society and government to educate and protect the children.”

The chief minister said there are 64 lakh to 65 lakh children aged below six years in the State, while about 39 per cent of the total population is aged below 14 years. He released the book ‘Sampriti Santrupti,’ comprising poems written by children and read out a poem by Shashikala Kale, a I PUC student from Hubballi that dealt with farmer suicides.

A book brought out by the Horticulture department on the legacy and history of Cubbon Park was also released. Followed by the inauguration, a host of cultural programmes were held with students from different states performing. The activities ranged from Dollu Kunitha, folk dance, Bharatanatyam to Yakshagana. They were held near the Band Stand and also at the Bal Bhavan.

The Horticulture department said folklore activities, karate, drawing competition, Kalaripayattu performance, Yakshagana, drama and other programmes will be held on Sunday also.

Nehru Yuva Kendra celebrated Founders Day and Jawaharlal Nehru’s birth anniversary by presenting Nehru Sadbhavana national award and Nehru Pratibha Puraskar award at Malleswaram. A mythological story telling competition was held at Adamya Chetana, Kempegowda Nagar. 

My Dental Plan Healthcare along with Delhi Public Schools (DPS) will hold ‘Brush Right Smile Bright’ event on November 17, wherein they plan to create a Guinness world record by assembling more than 18,000 children and getting them to brush simultaneously at DPS East campus, Sarjapur Road.
