The placement season began only as recently as August at the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) yet Jyothi R, a final year student, has already bagged placement offers from three companies and has to now decide which offer to accept.

Jyothi and the other final year students of the college were the first batch to receive a series of training sessions and introductory workshops on various aspects ranging from grooming for job interviews, resumé building to English communication by three big IT companies.

“I would say that these trainings definitely gave a boost to my confidence” Jyothi said. Cognizant, Infosys and Accenture are the three companies which have shown a keen interest in the students’ recruitment this year.

While these companies have come to the college previously for placements, it is the first time that the recruiters have played the role of trainers as well. Considering that many of these companies hire on a mass scale, the students and faculty are all smiles.

Professor K B Raja, placement officer at UVCE, said that the college had hired a few private agencies to provide training but they requested these companies to give training in addition to this.

“Placements have been very good this year. As of now, 75 per cent of 400 final year students from five engineering branches have already been placed, which was not the case in previous years. The training provided by the companies is one of the reasons behind this success,” he said.

A representative of one of the companies said that similar training sessions had been conducted in five private colleges. UVCE, however, was the only government college in the state where they conducted the session. “When we provide such training, the objective is not only to help students crack our interviews but to help them ace interviews of other potential recruiters as well”, he said.

Prof Raja said that another IT company, Wipro will soon be conducting training sessions for students as well as teachers. “The teachers will receive training on faculty development and students will be equipped with various skills sets,” he said.
