Quota sought for OBCs in legislature

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday sought reservation of seats for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the legislatures and parliament.

Speaking at a Hindu Sadara Samavesha, Siddaramaiah said there should be a nationwide discussion on extending reservation to OBCs in legislatures and parliament as is being done in local bodies.

At present, seats are reserved only for SC/STs in legislatures and parliament. A constitutional amendment would be required to extend reservation to the OBCs.“There should be representation for all castes and communities in assemblies and parliament. It is only then we can have a true democratic setup. If the reservation system cannot be extended, then we should have a provision to nominate members from various communities to elected bodies,” Siddaramaiah said. Law Minister T B Jayachandra said there was not enough representation to the Sadara community in the elected bodies. It was time the community got its due in electoral politics, he said.
