The happy feet

It’s a given that the clothes you wear have to be fashionable, so why should your socks be dull, old and monotone all the time? That’s where ‘Footsy’ comes into the picture and gives everyone a chance to show off their style statement with colourful and bright socks.

An idea that was born under a street light in a quiet bylane of Bengaluru in 2012, Seema Seth and Pooja Mehta found their true calling when they started this. The two, who have artistic backgrounds, began brainstorming, ideating, travelling to places they’d never imagined they would, and surfed the internet to bring out something creative that everyone would be able to wear.

Seema says, “I’ve seen a lot of places abroad where socks are a fashionable accessory but it’s not a trend here. So, we wanted to bring in that ‘cool culture’ here and make the traditionally bland apparel into something that is fun and quirky.” It took them about eight months to finally launch the start-up as they had to do a whole lot of research in terms of material and manufacturers. “We have three manufacturers who do the work for us. We send them the designs and material and they do the printing,” she explains.

Recently, they launched an initiative to work with creative artists and use their work as part of their designs. The one to mark is Alicia Souza who has been producing many animal themed socks. Seema says, “Alicia is a very talented artist and a lot of people love her work. With her being on the team, our quirky animal sock collection has sold out. We are planning to bring in an artist every couple of months so that it’ll give our products a range to choose from.”

Targetting the young generations who are willing to experiment with their designs, ‘Footsy’ delivers all around the country. “It was a bit difficult to tackle the men’s collection because not everyone will want to try something bright and colourful. We started with a regular formal wear for them, some with colourful stripes as well, but then we’ve slowly evolved to designing more funky ones. To our lucky, we’ve got great responses,” says mentions.

So, is there a particular design that they can’t wait to try out? “Of course! We’ve always wanted to try glow-in-the-dark socks, but it’s quite difficult to find the material. Mostly, we’re not sure if everyone would want to try them,” they say. They are also hoping to introduce the ‘mismatch sock’ range (each sock will have a different design and pattern on it) in the near future.

The team also designs hand-knitted woollen snugglers (foot warmers) which is just perfect for the cold winter nights. The collection also includes knee-length socks, crew socks, ankle length socks and sockets, with stripes, dots, crazy patterns and possibly everything else! If one gives a minimum order for 200 socks, ‘Footsy’ will also customise it.

Seema adds, “Sock designing is a lot more fun than one thinks it would be. I love that there are no limitations and it’s a lot of fun to work with a variety of colours and designs. The best part about being a sock designer is that you have a lot of creative freedom. Also, one can never have enough socks!”
