Sandalwood actor Dhananjaya has always been into exercising and staying fit. But the role in his upcoming movie ‘Boxer’ pushed him to test his own strength.

So he took up kick-boxing and intensive physical training for almost a year. And now, many in the industry and his fans are pleasantly surprised by his workout video released recently by moviemakers. It shows how intense those sessions were.

With the movie slated to release on November 20, Dhananjaya is excited. About the video, he says that this might be the first time such a clip was released in the Kannada industry before the film’s release. “Everyone is appreciating it and sharing their feedback. Some of the sequences like the pull-ups are really difficult to do. Actor Darshan lauded me for my efforts and told me that I did a good job,” he proudly says.

“I’ve been working on the project for almost a year now though the shooting didn’t take very long. I practised  boxing for six months and there was also other rigorous workouts involved apart from the strict diet. And now that the movie is coming out, I’m looking forward to how the audience will react to it,” he says.

He says that “the movie needed him to have a well-toned body, which would look apt for the character” and he hopes that he has done justice to this.

He adds, “It’s only when I look like my character that the audience will be convinced about the role.” Though Dhananjaya lost around 10 kg for the role, he says that he concentrated more on strengthening exercises than ‘weight-loss’ ones.

“Boxing helped me to fit into the role physically and otherwise.” Though he sustained injuries and aches through the project, he humbly says that “such incidents will keep happening”. Dhananjaya believes in the phrase, ‘no pain, no gain’. “One has to endure pain for good results. Even boxers at the fighting ring undergo a lot of pain. This is normal,” he says.

On asking what made him accept the role, he says, “It was different and challenging. The movie is an intense love story about a boxer who is struggling with his past, trying to leave it behind and hoping to have a better future. One can see how his life changes when a girl enters his life. It’s a boxer’s love story and is high on emotions and action,” he says.

Shooting for the movie was a great experience, says Dhananjaya. “It was a very friendly set-up. In most movies there is a visible hierarchy when it comes to director, actors, technicians and artistes. But in this movie, everyone was having a nice time. People were very friendly on the sets,” he says.

The actor isn’t nervous about how the movie will be received. “I know that the movie will be accepted well,” he says with a smile, adding, “It’s a feel-good pleasant film and will entertain the audience as it is meant to.” Looking forward to other projects like ‘Jessie’, ‘Badmaash’ and ‘Allama’, Dhananjaya says that they have helped explore his acting capabilites.

“The audience will be seeing me in many characters. While there is a surprise element in ‘Jessie’, ‘Badmaash’ will be a perfect commercial entertainer and ‘Allama’ is about the 12-century poet Allama Prabhu,” he says.

Dhananjaya says that he wasn’t able to take a break since the past one year and is looking forward to plan a trip after ‘Boxer’ is released. “I haven’t been able to step away from work and I’m looking forward to taking a break soon,” he says.
