For the first time, children up to the age of 18 years will form a human chain on November 20 to mark World Child Rights Day, chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Kripa Amar Alva, said on Wednesday.

Speaking to the media, she said the human chain would start from the Central Library and move through Cubbon Park, past Vidhana Soudha, General Post Office, Raj Bhavan, Chalukya Hotel and back. The chain will start at 9 am and conclude at 11 am. Children from government, private and aided schools will participate in the event. Essay and elocution competitions will be held across the State to mark the occasion. Many schools across the City and the State have signed up for the event.

This event is being held for the first time in the City to spread awareness about child rights among adults and children. This is needed in the light of increasing cases of female and infant foeticide and child labour, she said.

Alva pointed out the low number of complaints received by the commission was not only because many cases went unreported, but also because most complainants went to the police station and then to the court. The commission is dealing with cases pertaining to corporal punishment and parents’ separation. People need to be aware of the commission’s activities and how it is can help children. Thus, the human chain being organised will be helpful, she said.
