Murdered mum's kids face tough time ahead

The grandparents of the three kids whose father is accused of murdering their mother are now worried about their future.

On Tuesday, 27-year-old Aashish was arrested for the murder of his wife over suspicion that she was having an illicit relationship with their paying guest. The man murdered her wife in front of their three children aged five, three and one in north-west Delhi’s Wazirpur village and fled from the house.

Aashish had a love marriage with Jyoti. Their married life was going smoothly until Aashish started having financial trouble, the mother-in-law of Aashish said. “He started asking money from us. When we didn’t give him money, he used to vent his anger on his wife by beating her,” said Rani, mother of Jyoti.

“Now that the mother of these children has died and their father is in jail, we are the only guardians left for them. But we both are old; how long can we sustain them? What will happen to their studies?” Rani said.

According to neighbours, Aashish was a nice person, but he didn’t like the fact that his wife was dependent on her parents to a big extent. “He didn’t like it when his in-laws were involved in his personal life to a very large extent,” said Pankaj, a shopkeeper in the neighborhood.

“For the last one year he has been facing financial crisis and used to frequently quarrel with his wife as she hardly bothers about his problems,” he added.

The situation got worse when Jyoti kept a person as a paying guest in their one-room house. They were hoping that the guest would help them financially, but the guest never did. Later, Aashish started suspecting that his wife had an illicit relationship with him.

The guest was in fact living free of cost for the last three-four months. When Aashish insisted on evicting the paying guest from their room, his wife remained adamant in keeping him, saying he would pay later, which irritated the accused a lot, police said.
