Tihar under tight security cover for Chhota Rajan

Last Updated 20 November 2015, 20:37 IST

Security has been stepped up in and around jail number two of Tihar prison complex with the arrival of underworld don Chhota Rajan, who has been remanded in 14-day judicial custody.

Tamil Nadu Special Police have strengthened the inner ring, while Indo Tibetan Border Police force and Central Reserve Police Force have increased surveillance to ensure that nothing is smuggled to Rajan. On Friday, meals were also checked before being sent to him. The set-up was discussed at a recent meeting attended by senior officials from the jail, Delhi Police and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

“Extra security personnel have also been deployed as Rajan had sought security saying he apprehended threat to his life. Rajan fears that rivals might try to eliminate him during his transportation, production in courts and inside the prison complex,” a source said.

Rajan’s high-security ward already has a three-layer security apparatus. It has been enhanced further with enhanced vigil being kept on every movement within and outside jail number two. “The security of the entire complex has been increased by several notches. No risk will be taken as far as Rajan’s security is concerned,” the source added.

Tihar also houses many hardcore terrorists and other high-profile inmates due to which security always remains a priority for the authorities.

Rajan was moved to his cell amidst heavy security at 6 pm on Thursday.
