Reforms to streamline patient care at ESIC hospital

Online appointments, afternoon OPDs planned

A new set of reforms have been planned at the Rajajinagar Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) model hospital. From online appointments to special afternoon OPDs, these changes would herald an improvement in patient care.

With the union government laying down a new set of rules in February this year, new patients who have to undergo dialysis were not to be covered. To address this issue, the hospital management would be setting up 10 dialysis units on a public-private-partnership model where ESI beneficiaries can avail the treatment free of cost. Tenders have been called for the same.

Helpline

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Dr Rachita Biswas, medical superintendent, ESIC Model Hospital, said that a helpline would also be started.

“A doctor will be taking these calls to help patients in case of confusions or if they need any information. This will function round the clock,” she said.

The hospital sees no less than 1,800 patients in the out-patient department on an everyday basis. It is not easy for senior citizens to wait for their turn and for those having chronic ailments to get special attention.

Dr Biswas said that to address this issue, special afternoon OPDs have been planned.
“There are 20 departments in all. A facility will be provided to those with chronic issues or those needing special attention to visit the specialists between 2 pm and 5 pm,” she said.

Speciality clinics
The hospital has a diabetes clinic, hypertension clinic, cancer clinic, cornea clinic, high risk pregnancy clinic and also a dedicated breast cancer detection section.

Leakage in the old buildings and from the terrace of the new building has been dealt with, said the medical superintendent. In an attempt to beautify the hospital, it will be re-painted and flower pots have been installed in the corridors. A lounge has been planned for the patients’ visitors at the park on the premises.

Online appointments can be taken by logging on to the ESI website soon. This will be open for the speciality clinics. “This will help save a lot of patient time. Patients will not have to wait for long hours,” Dr Biswas said.
