A day after, a 'cosmetic' makeover at accident spot

Fills single pothole near Ramakrishna Ashram, forgets others

A day after a woman was severely injured after a concrete mixer lorry rear-ended her bike when she tried to avoid a pothole near Ramakrishna Ashram in Basavanagudi, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Sunday filled the pothole with gravel. But,  the civic agency did not bother to fill other potholes on the stretch which pose a danger to motorists.

The busy Ramakrishna Ashrama Circle connects Bull Temple Road, Gandhi Bazaar Main Road and the National College Road. All these roads have been badly damaged due to continuous rains and heavy movement of vehicles. While the BBMP took note of the pothole that led to Saturday’s accident and filled it, the civic agency chose to ignore many potholes that dot these roads.

Purushottam, husband of 38-year-old Girijamma who was injured in the accident, said: “I went to the spot this morning and found that a few people were covering the pothole with gravel. They said that they were instructed to do so by BBMP officials. These stones pose even more danger, as the motorists can skid and fall on the road. Also, there are numerous potholes on the stretch which were not filled,” he lamented.

K S Sanjay, a resident of Channamanakere Achchukattu, who regularly commutes on this stretch, said the asphlat has come off the roads at many places around Ramakrishna Ashram and several potholes and craters have surfaced. He said there is no proper drainage in place around the Ashrama Circle and even a light rain leads to flooding in the area.

“If the BBMP makes sure that quality asphalting is done, then the road would not be damaged easily, just after a few days of rain,” opined Sanjay who works as a site engineer with a construction firm.

Plastic surgery advised

Meanwhile, Girijamma has been advised to under go plastic surgery. “The doctors have advised that she will require a plastic surgery as the flesh on her leg was scrapped off during the incident. The police had come to take her statement, but were asked to come back after a couple of days, as she is yet to regain the strength to speak,” Purushottam said.

She is in the ICU of a private hospital and is able to speak only for a few minutes, as she gets exhausted. The Basavanagudi traffic police said that they visited Girijamma at the hospital and she is not in a condition to make a statement. Once her statement is recorded, the investigation will be conducted and people responsible for the accident will be booked, the police added.
