New low pressure brings back rain woes

Last Updated 23 November 2015, 19:21 IST

Rain continued to pound Tamil Nadu on Monday even as weathermen predicted more rain in the next two days.

The state has been reeling under floods for the past 10 days and a third new low pressure in the north-east Monsoon season has brought back fear among people.

“A trough of low-pressure at mean sea-level lies over Southwest Bay and adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean. Due to this system, isolated heavy rain will occur over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next 48 hours,” a Met official told Deccan Herald.

In Chennai, rain accompanied by gusty winds crippled normal life, inundating low-lying areas and throwing vehicular traffic out of gear. The state capital recorded 70 mm rainfall in one hour.

Mayiladuthurai in Nagapattinam district received an unprecedented 20 cm rainfall in the last 24 hours followed by Karaikal district, which recorded 19 cm during the same period.

Fishermen from Tamil Nadu were warned not to venture into the sea as strong onshore winds from easterly direction were reaching at 55 kmph along the coast. The state government has put the district administrations on high alert. “All rescue teams are intact. They are equipped to face any flood situation,” an official said.
