'BMTC paid Rs 11.5 cr ex gratia last year'

Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has said that the BMTC has paid compensation to the tune of Rs 11.50 crore in connection with road accidents involving BMTC buses.

Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao told the Legislative Council on Monday that while Rs 13 lakh has been given as compensation by the corporation, the rest was paid as per court directions. Rao was replying on behalf of Transport Minister.

In the last three years, 2260 people have died in 2180 fatal accidents in Bengaluru. As many as 12,858 people were injured in 13,561 cases. In all, 15,741 accident cases have been reported, and of these, only 930 cases (5 per cent) involved BMTC buses.

The minister said 363 accident cases were caused by the negligence of BMTC drivers, whereas 567 cases involved drivers of non-BMTC buses. As many as three drivers have been dismissed in this regard, while the salary of 387 drivers was reduced. In addition, penalty has been imposed on 202 drivers and training has been extended to 67 drivers.
