SC refuses bail to jailed French woman

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to grant interim bail to a French woman accused of killing a Chilean senator in 1991, saying it cannot go soft on her with the world facing fresh threats from terrorists.

A bench of Justices T S Thakur and Kurian Joseph told senior advocate T R Andhyarujina, representing the 56-year-old French national Marie Emmanuelle Verhoeven, to argue the case as she could not be released interregnum.

“She is facing very serious charge. It also involves bilateral relations between two countries. You know what is happening all over the world. Terrorists are striking at will. We don't want to create any unnecessary complications,” the bench said, adding coordination among nations was the need of the hour.

The court also noted that the petitioner was part of a subversive group so there could be no middle course in directing her release.
