DC holds peace panel meeting

Stresses on need to prevent communal clashes; lists out measures

Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said the district administration will request the religious leaders from various communities to conduct discourses on communal harmony.

Chairing a peace committee meeting at the DC’s office Hall in Mangaluru on Wednesday, he said cooperation of the religious leaders is needed to instil peace and harmony in society.

The district administration is planning to conduct discourses by religious leaders of various communities at their respective religious centres.

The DC said the effects of Madikeri violence in connection with the Tipu Jayanti were seen in Dakshina Kannada and it is unfortunate. The communal clashes in the district may leave a permanent tag, which may affect the future of the youth. If the untoward incidents take place frequently, a situation may arise where the youth applying for passports may not get them as their name is connected with one or the other communal incident, which may make them unable to pass through police verification.

Hence, there is a need to prevent communal clashes, he said.
In future, the district administration will ban internet to prevent the spreading of rumours during untoward incidents and communal clashes, he said.

Zilla Panchayat CEO P I Sreevidya said that Gramotsava will be conducted in every villages in an effort to boost communal harmony.

Superintendent of Police Dr S D Sharanappa said some people have been making vague remarks saying the police have arrested innocents. The police will not arrest people without proper evidences, he clarified.


Mangaluru Central Committee President Ali Hasan said police should lodge criminal cases against those who give call for bandh.

K Vishwanath from Nagarika Hitarakshana Vedike suggested conducting peace meetings in every police station limits at least once in three months.

Dalit leader Chinnappa Bangera alleged that some organisations have been displaying provocative banners.

The DC said that steps will be taken within a week to direct the gram panchayats to grant permissions to display banners and posters only after checking the content. The gram panchayat president and PDO will look into the issue, he said.

Ravindra Raj from Ullal said police should disguise themselves to examine the situation in various localities.

Zilla Panchayat president Asha Thimmappa Gowda, DCP Shantaraj, Additional Superintendent of Police Vincent Shanthakumar and Additional Deputy Commissioner Kumar were present.
