A 27-year-old woman is battling for her life in a hospital after she was bludgeoned by her husband on Sunday morning with a metal bell at her parents’ residence when she refused to return with him to their house after leaving it due to his constant torture.

The woman has sustained serious injuries on all over her body especially in head and face, and she is reported to be in critical condition in Safdurjung hospital, said her relatives.

Kamal Kishore Thakur, 38, was nabbed by the relatives’ of Phoolondevi and handed over to the police when he was fleeing from the spot after beating his wife in North West Delhi’s Rohini’s sector-21, said police.

“My aunt was living with us for the last two days as her husband had beaten her few days back. Earlier also he had beaten her and their children,” said Jyoti, niece of Phoolondevi.

Married for 14 years, the couple was going through a strenuous phase of their relationship due to the infrequent supply of income at the house and allegedly immoral character of the husband.

“Uncle works as a prototyping-on-paper maker, but he never got regular work, which used to create tension in the house. He used to vent out his frustration of being unemployed on his wife and children,” Jyoti said.

“More so, he had an affair with another woman also, which made him treat his wife contemptuously. Whenever she raised the subject to him, he would silence her with a round of thrashing with his belt,” she added.

After being fed up with the constant torture, Phoolodevi left his house with her children on Thursday and came to her parents’ home located nearby after writing on a piece of paper that she wants divorce from him.

“Phoolondevi came to her mother’s place and narrated her ordeal to her. Her mother consoled her and asked her to wait till Monday when her brothers come from Punjab and talk to Thakur about the issue,” said Ravi, a relative of the victim.

On Saturday, Thakur came to Phoolondevi’s mother house and took away the children saying that he regretted the things and would welcome her back also. “On Sunday morning, Thakur again came here in the pretext of filling his bucket with water. He had brought kids also. He saw that nobody except Phoolondevi and her niece were present at the house so he entered the house and asked his wife to come with him at the backyard,” said Ravi.

As the couple went at the rear through the rear gate, Thakur bolted the door.

“He then asked her to come back to the house. Phoolondevi, however, told him that she can’t go with him until her brothers come from Punjab on Monday. Thakur got angry by the stubbornness of his wife and took a metal bell lying nearby and hit the woman with it,” Ravi said.

“As Phoolondevi got hit and fell on the ground, he again rushed towards her and put the bell on her face and took a brick and hit it on the bell with full force, knocking the woman down,” he added.

Phoolondevi’s niece who was unable to reach there because of the bolted door started to shout for help which attracted people there. When Thakur saw the noise of people coming from outside he ran from there and tried to hop on an auto when the crowd caught him and thrashed him before handing him over to police.

A case of attempt to murder has been registered with Begumpur police station.
