Peter Mukerjea sent to judicial custody till December 14

Media tycoon and STAR India former CEO Peter Mukerjea, who was arrested in the Sheena Bora murder case, has been remanded in judicial custody and sent to Arthur Road prison on Tuesday, even as the CBI is bracing up to file chargesheet as early as possible.

Mukerjea’s wife Indrani Bora nee Mukerjea, her first husband Sanjeev Khanna from Kolkata and driver Shyamwar Rai were chargesheeted on November 19, the day he was arrested.

Sheena was the daughter of Indrani and her first live-in partner Kolkata-based Siddhartha Das. Besides, an attempt was also made on the life of Indrani’s son and Sheena’s brother Mikhail Bora, who is based in Guwahati.

During the course of his 11-day custody, Peter was subjected to grilling session by CBI sleuths at the office of the Special Task Force in Mumbai and the agency’s headquarters in New Delhi. He was grilled on various financial aspects of the murder and whether he had prior knowledge of the crime.

“The accused is remanded in judicial custody till December 14,” additional chief metropolitan magistrate N B Shinde said, after the probe agency submitted that it did not want his further custody

“The investigation for now is over and Peter may be remanded in judicial custody,” CBI’s counsel Kavita Patil said. Peter’s lawyer Kushal Mor, however, said they don’t have any objections to the extension of his CBI custody for the complete satisfaction of the agency.

Meanwhile, Peter’s brother Gautam told reporters outside the court that “Peter is innocent and truth will prevail”.

A few days ago, in a statement to the media, he had said: “The whole family is confident of Peter’s innocence and we are in no doubt that due process will ultimately reveal this.

It would be best at this time that the agencies are allowed to conduct their work in an unhampered manner, without irresponsible conclusions being arrived at in the interim period by any party.”
