Cong sees anti-Modi trend in Gujarat results

As the Gujarat local bodies election results trickled in, the Congress on Wednesday claimed victory saying it reflected a clear trend against the Modi government.

“We are now seeing a clear continuation of the concept – whether it is Delhi, whether it is Bihar and now across the state of Gujarat,” AICC spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.

He said the projection of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah as invincible leaders was far from reality.

Party mouthpiece ‘Congress Sandesh’ also said the victory of the Grand Alliance in Bihar was “historic” and “will mark the beginning of decline of the Modi government”.
The Congress has won 22 of 31 district panchayats in Gujarat, a massive improvement over the lone panchayat it had won in 2010.

The main opposition also won more than 50 per cent of the state’s 231 talukas or block-level panchayats.

What the Congress found heartening were the victories in Bechraji in Mehsana district, the home district of Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, Home Minister Rajani Patel and Finance Minister Nitin Patel.

The Congress has also wrested the panchyat in Vadnagar town, the birthplace of Modi.
Congress leaders said the encouraging poll results would definitely give a fillip to the revival of the party in the state where it has been out of power since 1995.

However, in urban areas of Gujarat, the voters have clearly sided with the BJP which won all the six municipal corporations as also 40 of the 56 municipal councils.

The BJP also won the municipal council in Viramgam, the home-town of Hardik Patel, the torchbearer of the Patidaar agitation for reservation in government jobs and educational institutions.

Hardik Patel and others had appealed to the influential Patel community to vote against the BJP for rejecting their demand for reservation, but that seems to have had little impact in areas like Ahmedabad and Surat.
