A cheats’ gang has been busted with the arrest of two men, police said. The culprits were cheating people by gathering information about their debit cards on the pretext of card verification while posing as RBI officials.

The two accused have been identified as Pappu Mandal, 22, and Dhananjay Mandal, 24. The duo used online wallets Paytm and PayUmoney and had bank accounts opened in Kargil for transaction.

Police said on November 6, a complaint was received in which the complainant had stated that he received several phone calls on November 5 from a man who said he was a RBI official, asking for his debit card details on the pretext of card verification.

The caller also warned the complainant that his debit card would be blocked if he did not provide the information within couple of hours.

Scared, the man gave his card details to the caller, and approximately Rs 1,60,000 were siphoned from his account. Following it, he went to police, and a case was registered with Parliament Street police station and an investigation taken up.

During investigation, it was found that the amount from the victim’s account was transferred to Paytm and PayUmoney wallets, and in an SBI account in Kargil.

On further scrutiny of the transactions, it was found that some of the online purchasing through these online wallets were made at online shopping websites, like Myntra and Jabong, and the addresses provided by the accused for delivery of goods were of Delhi.

Logistics and delivery employees of the websites were examined who informed that the accused used to receive delivery at different places in Delhi.

Dhananjay Mandal was held in Gautam Nagar on November 25. He then revealed that Pappu Mandal of his native village in Jharkhand is the mastermind of the crime who used to place orders online with cheated money and pay him Rs 1,000 for receiving every delivery. A team of Delhi Police was sent to Jharkhand and Pappu was arrested.
