Pvt buses charging up to Rs 3,000 per ticket

People travelling to Bengaluru from Chennai by private buses are having to shell out approximately a whopping Rs 3,000 for a single trip.

However, private bus owners claim they are not exploiting the passengers as they (the owners) have to bear the taxes and the toll fee.

“The cost of each bus trip is very high. We go virtually empty all the way to Chennai. Who is to bear that cost? We have to pay Rs 800 to Rs 900 as tax per seat and Rs 4,000 as toll for every trip up and down. From where to do we make up this spending and expenditure? Half the ticket charge would be for tax and toll. So, we have to charge the passengers keeping in view the costs we incur. We are not exploiting anybody,” a bus owner told thisnewspaper.

He said people were ready to pay a reasonable fare. Drivers and conductors explain the situation to some passengers as to why the charges are high. On the other hand, public service buses are charging  normal fare in the range of Rs 400 to Rs 700 depending on which bus is operating - AC/ sleeper/ non-AC/ luxury, etc. A KSRTC spokesperson said: “We charge the normal fare. Whatever rate we charge in other situations also applies to this situation. There is no question of hiking the fare, especially being a public bus service.”
