The East Division police on Saturday booked more than 100 rowdy elements under Section 110 CrPC (security for good behaviour from habitual offenders).

This is for the first time that the City police have invoked this provision of law against anti-social elements. The State government recently had granted magisterial powers to Additional Commissioners of Police, empowering them to act sternly against the rowdies. Those who have been booked are mainly habitual offenders involved in different crimes. About 40 per cent of them are involved in more than five cases while a majority of have three cases, mainly property-related crimes and rowdy activities, said the police. The rowdies were also booked under Section 107 CrPC (security for keeping peace in other cases)

Under these provisions of Criminal Procedure Code , the family members of the suspects will have sign a bond and submit it to the police. “We had summoned parents, wives, relatives and family members of those who have been booked. We clarified the reasons for booking them under CrPC. We also told the family members to keep a watch on the movements of the suspects and take steps to prevent them from committing crimes in future” added the officer.

About 25 women have come forward to sign the bond. The special drive was led by Additional Commissioner of Police (East) P Harishekharan as part of crime prevention week and the drive is likely to continue in North East and South East divisions in the days to come.
