Amid debate over growing intolerance in the country, newly-appointed Chief Justice of India Justice T S Thakur said so long as there is rule of law and independent judiciary, no one should fear from anything as equal protection to all sections of society would be ensured.

Observing that the talk of intolerance has got a political angle, he said, “The country is home to all religions of the world. People persecuted all over the world have lived here peacefully and flourished.”

“There has always been a realisation that we can flourish and give the most to the society, if it is inclusive and tolerant. Mutual respect in different faiths and religion should be promoted,” he said, in first interaction with journalists at his residence here.

Justice Thakur said there are certain rights which are available to all citizens here and there are some which are available to all individuals. Due procedure of law is available to even non citizens.

Talking about contribution by different sections of the people to the country, he said some of the best legal minds have come from the Parsi community in country, people like Fali S Nariman and Nani Palkiwala have contributed a lot.

He assured that the judiciary would protect all citizens irrespective of faiths or religions they practised.

“We should not get upset.. till the time,  there is independent judiciary and there is Rule of Law...there is no need for anyone to fear. We can ensure protection to all sections of society,” he said, adding, “we are committed to uphold rule of law and constitutional rights to all.”
