A traffic police sub-inspector was suspended on the charges of harassing a bike rider and dereliction of duty on Monday.

The police higher-ups issued an order suspending Anjanappa attached to the Chickpet traffic police station.

He is accused of harassing Amrut Bairy, collecting Rs 1,000 as bribe from him and trying to seize his bike a day after the offence, said the police.

Bairy was heading back home from work on Saturday around 11 pm when he was stopped by the traffic cops at Belimut junction.

The cops said they stopped him for shrill horn and Anjanappa demanded Bairy to pay a fine of Rs 1,100. Bairy left with his bike after paying the fine, said the police.

Hefty fine

“I returned home and I was a bit suspicious about the fine amount. I verified the fine amount for shrill horn and it was just Rs 100. It took no time for me to realise the cops had collected an additional amount which was bribe,” he stated in an online post.

He called up the police station to check out and complain about the incident, but he could not reach Anjanappa. He went to the Bengaluru Traffic Police Facebook page and narrated the sequence of events and lodged a complaint, said the police.

On learning about the incident, Anjanappa got furious, called up Bairy and directed him to collect Rs 1,000 on Sunday. He also sent a constable to Bairy’s house to seize the bike. Later, Bairy had an argument with the constable and claimed that he had not committed any offence and had already paid the fine amount, said the police.

Bairy contacted DCP (traffic west) Girish and lodged a complaint about the harassment and bribe. Police ordered a departmental enquiry against Anjanappa and suspended him, said the police.
