At least two persons were killed and 13, including women and children, were injured when a major fire gutted 2,000 hutments at the Damunagar slums at Kandivli in the far western suburbs of this metropolis on Monday.

Officials of Mumbai’s fire brigade and police said operations were underway to fight the fire.
Initial reports said there were a series of explosions of LPG cylinders that led to the spread of inferno that blazed through the dwellings.

Chief Fire Officer P S Rahangdale said at least 16 fire engines, 12 water tankers, five fire brigade officials along with jawans have been rushed to the spot to douse the flames.
Additional Commissioner of Police (North) Fatehsingh Patil confirmed that one totally charred body was recovered while several other victims - whose identity was yet to be established - were rushed to BMC’s Ambedkar Hospital.
