Miscreants pour oil into school well

Miscreants are learnt to have poured oil into a well on the premises of the Baitakhol government model higher primary school here.

Students, on noticing this, alerted the teachers. Soon, the teachers, members of the School Management and Development Committee and the citizens held a meeting.

The police came to the spot on being informed and a case was registered at the city police station. Officials of the Education department and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board later gathered information on the matter from the teachers.

Residents said that the well water was used for cooking mid-day meals for schoolchildren. Some residents also use this water for daily consumption. Because of this, the iron lids of the well had not been locked, N Rukmini, the headmistress told Deccan Herald.

She said that the water had not been contaminated till evening and that oil might have been poured into it at night. Efforts were made to remove oil using sponge, but traces still remain. Environment officer Yogananda has appealed to the teachers not to use the well water for a few days.
