Documentary, book to record milestones of VTU in the offing

Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has taken up an initiative to bring out a documentary and a book on the history of the university. A committee for the same has been constituted and the initiative is likely to be completed in the next three months.

VTU Vice-Chancellor H Maheshappa told Deccan Herald that except for brochure, there was no comprehensive exercise undertaken to map the milestones of VTU.

“The book and the documentary will put to record all the milestones of the university beginning from the inception of the university. The institution has grown from being a university with 60-65 affiliated colleges to more than 200 colleges today. This initiative will serve as the institutional memory,” he added.

As for funds, there was no requirement for separate funds to be allocated for the purpose, Maheshappa said. “We are planning to use in-house resources. However, for making the documentary, we will see if professional help is required.” He stated that it would be a fair assessment of the university.

'Committee not valid'

Meanwhile, Executive Council Member of VTU Karan Kumar has objected to the manner in which the committee was constituted. In a letter to the registrar of the university, he has pointed out: “The committee was formed on December 3. The members were asked to attend the first meeting the following day. As per regulations, the university should have taken the decision through the executive council. The V-C does not have powers to constitute a committee on his own.”

The executive council member has urged the registrar to withdraw the notification issued for the formation of the said committee.
