In a courageous act, a 21-year-old woman who runs a beauty parlour chased down one of the two bike-borne miscreants who snatched her mobile phone on Wednesday afternoon in Fraser Town police station limits. The other suspect managed to run away with the phone.

Around 2.15 pm, Maya (name changed) closed her beauty parlour located in
D’Costa Layout and started to walk back home nearby, talking over the mobile phone. Suddenly, she noticed two youths following her on a bike. The duo waylaid her, snatched her mobile phone and tried to speed off.

But a gritty Maya acted quickly, held onto the pillion rider’s shirt and started running along the motorcycle. She was in no mood to let the duo go off. To her misfortune, the shirt which she held onto was torn. But she still didn’t give up and managed to clutch the rear of the bike.

She kept sprinting along with the bike and was determined to somehow nab them. Passersby witnessing the scene were in for a shock. Finally, the rider lost control over the bike and crashed it into a wall. Immediately, the public ran to her rescue and caught the rider.

When Maya narrated the incident to them, one of them alerted the police who arrived at the spot and arrested the rider, who was later identified as Sheikh Dawood, 21. They also seized the bike.

“The arrested youth was taken to the police station and we have information about the absconding person. Based on the details provided by Dawood, we have launched a manhunt for him,” a senior police officer said. The police are investigating whether the duo was involved in similar offences.

“It takes courage for a woman to chase bike-borne miscreants for more than 200 metres. The incident happened in D’Costa Layout and the suspect was nabbed on Davies Road. Usually, people tend to stay quiet when something like this happens. But she helped us catch the miscreant,” the officer added.

A case has been registered at the Pulakeshi Nagar police station and investigation is being carried on.
