Konkan Railway officials detach train coach to rescue woman

Officials of the Konkan Railway detached an entire coach from a train to rescue an elderly woman whose leg got stuck in the toilet commode.

The bizarre incident occurred in Ratnagiri in Maharashtra early on Friday.  It took eight hours to rescue 65-year-old Rabiyabi Shaikh, a resident of Ghatkopar in Mumbai, unharmed after cutting the Indian-style commode.

She is safe and fine. Rabiyabi was travelling with her husband Kasam Shaikh in coach No. S-10 of 10111 Dn Konkan Kanya Express from Mumbai to Karmali.

She had gone to the washroom between Khed and Chiplun. When she opened the door to come out, she slipped and her leg got stuck in the commode.

Her husband waiting outside alerted the co-passengers and train officials. All rushed to the woman’s distress and dismantled the toilet door to ease the rescue efforts.

But the efforts went in vain as Rabiyabi couldn’t be freed, even after the train crossed Chiplun. When the train reached Ratnagiri, Regional Railway Manager B B Nikam along with officials, staff and doctors attended to the woman and it was decided that the
entire compartment would be detached to rescue her.

“It was decided that the coach will be detached to cut the Indian-style commode with the cutter in such a manner that she doesn’t get hurt. The passengers of that coach will be accommodated in another coach,” Konkan Railway spokesperson Siddheshwar Telugu said.
