The traffic police on Saturday launched a campaign against drunk driving with an intention to reduce the number of cases. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M A Saleem launched the campaign at the Opera Junction on Brigade Road.

The City police have taken drunk driving cases seriously as they are posing threats to road users. The number of drunk driving cases go up in December. Several lives are lost, including life-threatening injuries. Hence, the police decided to launch the campaign and create awareness among road users, he said.

The police will send the driving licence of first-time offenders caught for drunk driving to the RTO for suspension. There will be a strict punishment for second-time offenders. The police have decided to send third-time offenders to prison. The police are requesting the courts to send third-time offenders to prison to send a strong message, he added.

Manipal Hospital CEO Dr Sudarshan Ballal and Urban Analyst V Ravichandar Ballal requested the police to act mercilessly against those driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol.

Those driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol are a threat to other road users. Names, details and pictures of such offenders should be published in the newspapers so that vehicle-users are discouraged to indulge in such acts, they added.

To mark the occasion, a mangled car on a truck driven by a man in an inebriated condition, was flagged off. A board on the car displayed: “I was driven by a drunk.”Saleem, Ballal and Ravichandar distributed pamphlets and other material highlighting the features of the month-long drive.
