Bodies of artist, her lawyer found in drain in cardboard boxes

In a shocking incident, the body of Hema Updhahay, a high-profile artist and a Page 3 regular and her lawyer were found in a drain at Kandivli, in the western suburbs of Mumbai, in the early hours of Sunday.

Hema is the estranged wife of Chintan Updhayay (43) a leading artist who hails from Rajasthan. The bodies were packed in cardboard boxes, wrapped in plastic and thrown in a drain in Kandivali area. After investigation it has been found that the body was that of famous artist Hema Upadhyay, 42,  who hails from Baroda, and her lawyer Harsh Bhambani, 65.

The lawyer is a resident of King’s Circle at Sion, while Hema is a residence of Santacruz. Meanwhile, three people have been detained by the cops in connection with the gruesome murder.

Investigations also revealed that the victims were cut into pieces and the bodies were wrapped in cardboards and covered with plastic. They were later dumped in a drain by the murderers.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and forensic examination of the cardboard boxes and plastic material is being done.

Preliminary investigations reveal that more than two to three persons could be involved. Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikram Deshmani  said: “The police are investigating the cause of death and other aspects of the murder.”

On Friday night, Hema’s domestic help registered a police complaint  that she did not return home.  The family of 65-year-old Bhambani, too, had registered a police complaint after he failed to return home.

It may be recalled that in 2013 the artist had filed a complaint of harassment against her estranged husband Chintan Upadhyay, that he was painting obscene sketches on the walls of her room. Then Harsh Bhambani had represented Hema in the case.

Hema had won annual awards from the Gujarat Lalit Kala Academy and the national Lalit Kala Academy, and was a recipient of a national scholarship from the Ministry of Human Resources.
