Lavelle Rd residents demand shifting of dumpyard

A group of residents of upmarket Lavelle Road on Sunday took to streets protesting the unscientific management and disposal of garbage in the area by the BBMP.

The agitating residents, taking a dig at arbitrary ways of the Palike, complained that the uncleared garbage at the open dumpyard and the garbage transit point opposite BMW showroom, apart from the unbearable stink, is posing health hazards to the residents.

“The garbage collected from houses is dumped at the transit point. The mounds of garbage remain there, at times for days, till the lorries come to lift it. The uncleared garbage is causing untold misery to the residents and commuters. Repeated pleas to the Palike seeking permanent solution have failed to elicit any response, so far, laments Harinarayana, an aggrieved resident. The protestors said that as the area is located in Central Business District and frequented by locals, office-goers, shoppers among others. Hence, the garbage transit point should be shifted.

“This is unhygienic and a blatant violation of the garbage disposal laws. We demand that the Palike follow its own rules/guidelines pertaining to the garbage collection, segregation and disposal, the protesting residents said. The residents also said that there are no proper pavements on Lavelle Road, and at some points, there are no footpaths, making life difficult for pedestrians.
