Salgaocar to host BFC in I-League opener in Jan

After coming agonisingly close to clinching their second league title in as many years seven months ago, Bengaluru FC will once again embark on a journey to clinch the title when the 2016 edition of the I-League gets underway from January 9.

The city side, coached by Englishman Ashely Westwood, will travel to Goa to face Salgaocar FC in their first assignment on the opening day, before heading to Aizawl in Mizoram to take on the newly promoted side Aizawl FC on January 16.

On January 24, the Sunil Chhetri-led side will host Shillong Lajong, in what will be their first home game of the season. While the league organisers are yet to finalise on the kick-off time of most the matches, Bengaluru FC confirmed that their homes games at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium will kick-off at 7:00 pm IST.

Meanwhile, defending champions Mohun Bagan will host Aizawl and Salgaocar in their first two games of the season before playing the Kolkata derby on January 23.

Federation Cup in May
The Federation Cup will be played in May after the completion of the I-league.
The knock-out tournament will see the top eight teams from the league participate in what will be a one-month affair.

Unlike in the past, when the tournament was held in one city, the 2016 edition will see the teams play their respective games on an home and away basis.

While the first round will see the league champions take on the eighth-placed side in the league, the second placed team facing the seventh placed side and so on, the semifinals -- a two-legged encounter -- will have a draw of lots to decide the opponents. The final will be a one-off game played on a neutral venue.
