National-level sports meet for forest officials in Bengaluru, says Minister

A national-level sports meet of Forest Department officials will be held in Bengaluru from January 17 to 23, Minister for Forest, Environment and Ecology B Ramanath Rai said.

Speaking after inaugurating the newly-constructed swimming pool as part the golden jubilee celebrations of SDM College near Rathnavarma Stadium on Friday, he said the department has given preference to sports talents while recruiting staff to the department. One needs to have knowledge and training in swimming, he noted.

At present, swimming is considered as a basic instinct of human beings. The new swimming pool is a boon for all students who wish to learn swimming in this rural area and it meets international standards, Rai said.

He told the students to make good use of the facilities and hone their skills in sports and games.

SDM Educational Society President Dr D Veerendra Heggade said the swimming pool has been constructed from UGC assistance and more than Rs 2 crore has been spent on the pool construction. The college has been emphasising on quality by using modern technology, he said.

PV Bopanna, Water Pools Private Limited, Bengaluru, the chief engineer of the pool, was felicitated on the occasion.

SDM Educational Society Vice President S Prabhakar, Surendra Kumar, Secretary Harshendra Kumar, SDM College Principal Dr B Yashoverma were present.
