Awards to 33 'Thambis' of Madras Sappers

The Regimental Commanders Conference and Reunion of the Madras Sappers began on Friday with the customary Sainik Sammelan, presided over by Lieutenant General S P Nawathe, Colonel Commandant of the Madras Sappers.

In his address to the All Ranks of Madras Sappers, Nawathe congratulated all the Thambi Units and their gallant Jawans for stellar performances across the country and abroad.

He also said that all ranks must keep themselves abreast of the rapid changes in the field of National Security. He presented awards to 33 Thambis for their outstanding feats in various sporting events. The event was attended by Officers, JCOs and Jawans of the group representing each unit.

The agenda of the conference was to review Combat Engineering support to the Indian Army and take stock of the present training methodology.

Delegates expressed their views with diligence on training philosophy, administrative aspects and issues pertaining to the welfare of serving soldiers.

Regatta

Various competitions were organised among the battalions at a Regatta in Ulsoor Lake. Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala was the chief guest for the event. Combat engineering capabilities and skills developed by the Sappers were showcased at the event. Two floating tableaus specially highlighted the contributions of the Group during World War I to commemorate the Great War in its centenary year and the 1965 Indo-Pak War.
