Shettar calls CM a 'liar'

Last Updated 22 December 2015, 17:27 IST

Former chief minister Jagadish Shettar on Tuesday called Chief Minister Siddaramaiah a big liar.

He was speaking to reporters after canvassing for votes for Chennabasanagowda, the BJP candidate for the Legislative Council elections from the Ballari local authorities constituency.

Shettar dismissed the chief minister’s claims that it was he (Siddaramaiah) who had released funds for waiving farmers’ loans. The former chief minister said that it was during his (Shettar’s) tenure that taxes were raised from 14 per cent to 14.5 per cent so as to boost resources for the loan waiver scheme.

The additional Rs 1,000 crore collected in the form of taxes had been released to the co-operative societies for waiving of loans. During Siddaramaiah’s tenure, the Rs 2,600 crore that was mopped up due to the raise in taxes was forwarded to the co-operative societies. The funds were not contributed from Siddaramaiah’s pocket, Shettar said. Taxes continue to be levied even after the Rs 3,600 crore required to waive loans had been collected, he said.

The chief minister was trying to mislead the people through his claims, the BJP leader said.

Shettar criticised the government for not starting gruel centres for the affected people and cattle in drought-hit areas.
