2015 marked KCR's triumphant journey

The triumphant journey of architect of separate Telangana state Kalvakuntla Chandrasekhar Rao, known as KCR, continued throughout the year.

KCR successfully decimated entire opposition and strengthened his Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) that fought for statehood for over a decade.

The New Year began with the TRS bagging most of the seats in the Secunderabad cantonment elections indicating the unflinching affection of even urban Telangana towards KCR. On the other hand, the Telangana government continued its tirade against the residual Andhra Pradesh state for its rightful share.

KCR saw to it that all the combined assets geographically located in Telangana taken over by the state and froze all the combined accounts citing the provisions in the AP Reorganisation Act of 2014. KCR’s government was admonished by the courts on several counts for its highly controversial decisions like freezing the bank accounts of the AP State Higher Education Council and also records of the Intermediate Board.

The Telangana legislative Assembly and Council were slowly taken over by the TRS party. KCR under the “Operation Aakarsh” encouraged defections from the Telangana Congress and Telangana Telugu Desam Party, thereby strengthening his party’s position in both the Houses.

His controversial night time operation of winning over a TDP MLA at his farm house in Yerravalli on the outskirts of Hyderabad, a day ahead of MLC elections, has led to the “cash-for-vote scam” that rattled his political opponent Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

Telangana TDP MLA Revanth Reddy was caught on camera offering Rs 50 lakh to TRS party’s nominated MLA Stephenson to vote for TDP MLC candidate. KCR used the cash-for-vote issue to its fullest and saw it that not only TDP was beaten in the elections and also driven back Chandrababu Naidu to Andhra Pradesh.

KCR launched two of his pet projects. “Mission Kakatiya” for revival of water bodies and drinking water grid that provides potable tapped water to every household of the state.
However, KCR had his share of several overambitious and ill-conceived projects that died a natural death over time.

His plans to shift the secretariat and building it by demolishing Chest Hospital, Osmania hospital, pumping out water from Hussain Sagar, demolition of Ravindrabharathi and building skyscrapers on the banks of Hussainsagar, and taking over vacant lands of Osmania and Central University failed.

In 2015, Telangana witnessed revival of Islamist activity with several of its youth joining IS. The encounter in Nalgonda in which 5 Islamists were shot dead by police while they were being taken to another prison and encounter of two Maoists in Warangal signaled the troubled times ahead for the state.

The year, however, ends with the TRS winning Warangal Lok Sabha bypoll by a margin of 4.5 lakh votes, a clear indication that KCR’s image is not dented a bit.
