The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government has waived pending water tax bill of Rs 457 crore to be paid by consumers for the past 15 years in the wake of elections to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

Property tax has been slashed to a nominal Rs 101 per year for all those who are now paying up to Rs 1,500 benefiting over 3.10 lakh families in the city.

The ruling TRS also shocked the Opposition by amending the GHMC Act enabling it to complete the whole election process within a fortnight from the date of notification.

The elections to the crucial urban local body is expected to be held by the end of January.

The notification is likely to be issued on January 7 or 8.

For the ruling party which has a very strong presence in all other districts of Telangana, Hyderabad has never been its stronghold.

The polls will provide the first electoral opportunity for the TRS to improve its strength after the formation of the new state in 2014.

The state government is also keen on strengthening its base in the twin cities which has a sizeable population of settlers from other parts of the country, particularly from Andhra Pradesh.
