India to be lit up by LED bulbs by 2018 end: Goyal

The entire country would be lit by LED bulbs by the end of 2018 saving 100 billion units and Rs 14,000 crore per year as a result, said Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal.

He said this while inaugurating the two-day national conference on Energy Audit for Educational Institutions here on Thursday.

He further said a unit saved is equal to generation of 1.3 units, considering the transmission losses and hence a cautious use of the energy would not only result in reduction in the cost of production but also help in protecting the environment.

He urged everyone to avoid wastage and save energy so that the poor can benefit.

Expressed concern over the state of electrification even after almost seven decades since Independence, Goyal said providing electricity to each household is the target of the NDA government.

He said the central government is committed to provide 24x7 power even to the remote area overcoming all hurdles. He also said the government is exploring possibilities of a smart meter for those consuming over 200 units that would give a consumption pattern and help consumers avoid wastage.

He informed the percentage of coal production is showing a rising trend and would achieve a double-digit figure in the coming year.
