Govt-owned firm plans women-only Kannada news channel

 If everything goes as per plans, Marketing Communication and Advertising (MC and A) Limited, a state-owned firm, will soon launch a women-only news channel in Kannada.

Chairman of MC and A, L N Murthy, said, “A proposal will be submitted to the State government seeking Rs 400 crore for the project. The Centre has already given its consent for the initiative. Prasar Bharati has appreciated the same.” Murthy said that the channel that would be named ‘MC and A’ intends to shoot, produce and share the news related to legislature sessions with other channels. Priority will be given to programmes pertaining to tourism, folklore, arts, culture and boards and corporations, he said, add­i­ng that the channel would be managed and run by women.

Reacting to a specific query, Murthy said that it is necessary to have the State’s own channel, as the Centre-owned Chandana in Kannada under Doordarshan has its own limitations. The existing channel has to cover both State and Central government programmes. Murthy said that the company has maintained secrecy in printing labels for the Excise department, without giving room for duplicating the same. In the coming days, the company is keen to take up the job of printing question papers, and discussion in this regard will be held with the authorities concerned.

The company that was earlier known by the name ‘Marketing Consultants and Agencies Limited’  was rechristened as Marketing Communication and Advertising Limited recently on January 3, said Murthy.

The company was launched in 1972 as an entity of Mysore Sales International Limited (MSIL) under the Department of Industries and Commerce. It later became autonomous and has extended its focus area from government advertisements to event management.
