Karnataka State Large and Medium Industries and Tourism Minister R V Deshpande exhorted electronic industry majors to invest in the state so that they can take advantage of the large talent pool and research and development ecosystem here.

Inaugurating the India Electronics Week (IEW 2016) on Monday, Deshpande said that Karnataka is making concerted efforts to increase its strong presence in the electronics industry.

“Our slogan is ‘Invest in Karnataka’ and ‘Innovate in Karnataka’, because the future of India is made here,” he said.

Deshpande said that even though the state has made strides in IT, it stills lags behind in electronics. “In IT, we are second only to Silicon Valley. But in electronics, Karnataka contributes only eight per cent of India’s 1.5 per cent contribution to the $1,500-billion industry. The Karnataka government wants to change this scenario,” he said.

The minister said the government has resolved major bottlenecks in ease of doing business in the state by bringing single-window approvals, infrastructure facilities, addition of more power to the grid, etc. “We have excellent policies in place, and not ready for unnecessary concession to industries. Industry should also look beyond concession to grow in the country,” he said.

Speaking at the event, Additional Chief Secretary (Commerce and Industries) K Ratna Prabha said the state has renamed the Devanahalli Aerospace Park into International Aerospace, Defence and Electronics Park with a total acquisition of 3,000 acres.

“South Korea, Japan and Taiwan have evinced interest in the electronics industry of the state. The Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association (TEEMA) has already committed an investment of $500 million, and we have allotted 100 acres to them. Now they have come up with a proposal to acquire 1,000 acres,” she said.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Electronic Industries Association of India (ELCINA) and Deki Electronics Managing Director Vinod Sharma said that 107 Chinese mobile phone industry players will participate in the China-India Mobile Phone and Component Manufacturing Summit on January 13, in New Delhi.
