The City police have arrested a 29-year-old man who would take photos of women in compromising position with men at parks and extort jewellery from them by threatening them with dire consequences.

Ganesh, a native of Kundapura, who is employed as a cook at a hotel, would pawn the extorted jewellery with a pawnbroker. The police have also arrested the pawnbroker Lakshman, 43, and have recovered 341 grams of gold jewellery worth Rs nine lakh from him.

Ganesh’s modus operandi was to take photos of women in compromising position with men at parks and other places. He would then follow these women and blackmail them to part with their jewellery by threatening to show the photos to their family. He would delete the photos after collecting the jewellery, said the police.

He would also target men, who were seen with women. He would take to this crime whenever he needed money, added the police.

DCP (South) B S Lokesh Kumar told Deccan Herald that women had lodged complaints stating that they were robbed of their jewellery by unidentified men because they were afraid of their reputation being tarnished.

“Some women disclosed how they fell prey to the man who took their photos. They said that they stated false things in the complaints because they were afraid of their reputation being tarnished,” he said.

Till now, Ganesh extorted gold jewellery from 11 women in Jayanagar, Basavanagudi, Banashankari, Thyagarajnagar, KS Layout, Rajarajeshwarinagar and Girinagar, the DCP added. The police nabbed him using his call details. Ganesh had around 30 phones in his possession and was using some of them, the police said.
