City to host Young Chef Olympiad on Jan 29

Culinary students from 67 countries will vie for top honours in the second edition of ‘Young Chef Olympiad (YCO)’ starting from January 27.

The six-day YCO with total prize money of $ 10,000, organised by International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) will play host to talented student-chefs who will show their culinary skills in the Olympiad spread across six days and four cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Director IIHM Bangalore, Shalini Charles said: “A grand opening ceremony will be held at Talkatora Indoor Stadium, New Delhi, followed by the competition in all the four cities, culminating into a grand finale to be held in Kolkata on February 1. Culinary art students from England, France, Malaysia, China, Switzerland, Australia, USA among other countries will take part along with their mentors. The world's biggest Olympiad for culinary students will serve as a platform to connect culinary talent from across borders.”

She added that there will be two rounds with preliminary round to be held at the aforementioned cities. Top ten contestants in the first round will qualify for the finals to be held in Kolkata where top ten countries would be selected who will eventually compete in final round. 

Chef Shaun Kenworthy, Culinary Director, IIHM said,  “It is a great opportunity for aspiring young cooks to showcase their talent and make the country proud.”

The first edition was held in 2014 around same time with 15 countries taking part. The winner of the first edition was Ashwin from team Malaysia. The Olympiad in the City would take place at Royal Orchid Hotel, Old Airport Road on January 29.
