Bohemian food fantasy island

A modestly good sushi, tempura and other sea-food dishes will cost you your one day’s salary. But The Fatty Bao is giving you a ‘more than good’ variety of the same at a modest cost. On an ordinary Tuesday evening it is houseful.

In spite of not being located in a hub of a shopping centre, it is in a quite community complex, Sangam Courtyard, in RK Puram. An important reminder here, the place is shut in the afternoon for three to four hours.

It is a love child of two ideas – Asian-style dining and a bar, right in the middle, facing both the interior and the open area of the restaurant. As soon as you enter, lights are too dim, and the walls are telling mock stories of baos (steamed buns).

Eclectically designed light fixtures, yellow doors and high standing poles remind you of a bohemian fantasy island where a lot of baos filled with exotic titbits will be flooding the floor.

Not so literally, but the menu is definitely flooding with various varieties of baos. A yin and yang of sorts, it brings together modern interpretations of the bao and a yuzu-laced mojito. Soulful Chasu Ramen, ‘melt in the mouth Pork Belly, Spicy Scallop Nigri, Char Siu Bao, Wild Mushroom and Truffle Oil Dumpling, Fatty Oysters Broiled with Mushrooms, ‘Soy and Chorizo, Miso Cod, Salmon Carpaccio and Japanese Cheesecake; a dainty and stylish Brie Tempura sit comfortably on the menu alongside some all-time favourites.

The Wasabi Drop adds a spicy punch to the evening. The Golden Globe is a fruity and refreshing drink with a twist of lemon grass. Ho-Gin-Min blends Sambuca, white wine, gin, muddled with fresh ginger, sugar and lime, while Mickey Ninja is vodka, shaken with muddled fresh orange slices and cucumber with a dash of whisky.

Fatty Sour is a sensual blend of fresh raspberries, whisky and lime  and Mandalay Bay combines jasmine tea infused with vodka, shaken with lime juice, orange slices and topped with ginger beer.

The bar is rather significant in the ambience. It is open from both sides. The bartenders look graceful making the drinks, like showmen, showing off their talents. With the groovy music in the background, they swing their mixing glasses in the air and dangerously slant the drinks to pour.

Metrolife finds from The Fatty Bao team, that their cocktails are crafted from house-made syrups and locally sourced fresh produce. For the traditionalists and the less adventurous, well-executed classic cocktails, single malts and premium spirits are also served.

Refreshing, with plenty of natural light filtering in, this space brings to your plate all that the name whips up! Not just any bao, this is The Fatty Bao, amply fed with sensory elements.
