Last Updated 24 January 2016, 02:32 IST

The driver of a bus rammed it into the wall of St Thomas Church in south Delhi’s RK Puram on Saturday morning. The bus was found near the church, but the driver is absconding.

The incident took place at around 6.30 am in RK Puram Sector-2. It was reported to police by Father Jesuraj.

“The Father was in the church when he heard a loud crash. He went outside and saw the damaged wall,” said a police officer.

The errant driver had tried to flee with the vehicle but failed. An eyewitness told Jesuraj that a bus had rammed into the wall.

“The bus was seen 200 metres ahead of the spot. The front portion had been damaged,” the officer added. The driver was not there.

On the basis of Jusuraj’s statement, a case under section 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code has been filed with RK Puram police station.

The investigating officers have contacted the owner of the bus UP 70DT 8281.
After the initial probe, police suspect that the bus driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed the vehicle.

Special security is provided by Delhi Police at churches as assured after the fire at St Sebastian’s Church in north east Delhi’s Dilshad Garden in December 2014.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also summoned Delhi Police Commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi in February 2015 over Christian institutions being targeted in the capital.
