Director-General-cum-Civil Defence Commissioner J K Khanna heaved a sigh of relief when Chief Judicial Magistrate awarded punishment to a truck driver, whose rash driving had led to the death of his son Nikhil Khanna in 2002.

Nikhil was a final year student of Electronics and Communications engineering at the Birla Institute of Technology, Ranchi. During Durga Puja vacations, he had come to meet his father in Patna. After the vacations, Nikhil left Patna by a bus on October 23 night for Ranchi. But on the way the bus stopped for a while on the Patna-Ranchi road for refreshment.

“It was around 3.30 am when a speeding truck hit the bus from the rear. The bus moved and hit an electric pole. As a consequence, an electric wire of 11,000 volts snapped and fell on the ground. Nikhil and other passengers tried to get out of the vehicle, but did not succeed,” said J K Khanna. Nikhil was electrocuted by the hanging live wire.
