Games upset training schedule: Poovamma

Karnataka athletes MR Poovamma and Sahana Kumari landed India a gold each at the 12th South Asian Games but instead of soaking in celebration they hit out at the administrators for being asked to compete here despite their reluctance.

Ever since Guwahati and Shillong were confirmed as hosts for the Games many top athletes from various disciplines expressed their unhappiness in turning up, saying it was disturbing their Rio Olympic preparations. While some have managed to give this event a miss, many have not been that lucky, with their frustration clearly visible.

“I’m not really happy with my performance today,” said a dejected Poovamma after winning the 400M. “I never planned compete here as I was just coming out of my off-season. I was asked to compete as this was happening in India. My main focus was on trying to qualify for the Rio Olympics. I was in training mode.

“I was not into the competition mode. I had to make adjustments with my schedule. The field too was not a strong one. I’m glad that the race was over. My focus now would be competing in key events ahead of the Olympics. That’s the top priority.”

Sahana, who won the high jump event, too echoed Poovamma’s thoughts. “I’m not happy with my jump. I was totally in training mode. It’s hard for us to switch from training to competition just like that. It affected my performance today. I couldn’t perform the way I wanted. I was asked to compete here at a very short notice.”
