Family of rape 'culprit' alleges blackmail

Family of 45-year-old Gopal Chauhan has been living in a state of shock, shame and disbelief ever since name of their father has cropped up as the accused in the rape of their tenant.

A father of a son and two daughters, Chauhan has a business of postal delivery service in east Delhi’s Patparganj market.

“TV news channels are showing our house as the ‘rapist ka ghar’ but everyone in the colony knows what kind of people that woman and her husband are,” said Anand Singh, a relative of Chauhan.
Terming the issue as that of a blatant blackmail, Chauhan said the woman and her husband have not paid their room rent for the last six months. When we tried to remove them from the house, they started threatening us.

“It all started when one of our clients expressed his desire to buy the entire first floor where the woman and her family have been living. We informed the family about it, but they refused to vacate,” Singh added.

According to Singh and some neighbours of Chauhan, the woman has a penchant for picking up fights with people over trivial matters.

“One day, I requested her not to park her scooter in front of our door. She got so incensed to me that she started abusing, asking if I ‘own’ the area,” said a neighbour, living in a separate house.

“After hearing the noise my son also came out and started questioning about the incident. Thinking him as an attacker taking her mother’s side, she started beating him. I had to intervene, or my son would have beaten her in retaliation which would have aggravated the matter,” she added.

The neighbours claim that several times they have complained against her to the police. The relative of the main accused Gopal Chauhan, however, thinks that her latest rape charge is an attempt to extract an exorbitant sum from Chauhan.

“You can ask anyone here, my brother-in-law is such a gentle person by nature. Ask anyone here if he can do such an act. The husband-wife duo is demanding Rs 10 lakh from the accused family to settle the matter out of court. That’s their ultimate aim,” said Anand Singh, relative of Chauhan.
