Last Updated 11 February 2016, 17:45 IST

Lok Sabha member Nalin Kumar Kateel has said that Congress will be defeated in the zilla and taluk panchayat elections.

Addressing media persons after releasing the BJP manifesto for the zilla and taluk panchayat elections at the party’s district unit office here on Thursday, he said even the elected representatives from Congress are fed up with the style of administration of the State government.
Kateel said that the State government has failed to safeguard the interest of farmers. The curse by farmers will befall on the Congress and the party will be defeated in the panchayat elections, he claimed.

The MP said hundreds of farmers have committed suicide during the three years of Congress-led government in the State. The government has failed to prevent farmers from committing suicide, he criticised.

He charged that the government has failed to effectively present its argument in the court on Kumki land rights of farmers. Therefore, the farmers are deprived of their rights on Kumki land.

Also, the government has not provided support price for areca, he said and criticised that when the farmers are in dire straits, the chief minister is wearing a wrist watch worth Rs 80 lakh.

Kateel said the government has neglected Panchayat Raj system. “BJP had given thrust on empowerment of rural development and Panchayat Raj system during its term. Road development works were carried out in rural areas under ‘Namma Grama Namma Raste’ scheme. Honorarium was provided for taluk panchayat members and recruitment of staff was done. Direct release of Rs 1 crore grant to each taluk panchayat and Rs 2 crore to each zilla panchayat were its achievements.

In the district also, the zilla panchayat has given a good administration under the leadership of BJP.
But during the tenure of Congress, the zilla panchayat grants were cut and the honorarium of TP members’ was also reduced,” he charged.

The law and order situation in the district is not good. There is an instance where 22 murders have taken place in Dakshina Kannada district alone, including the double murder in the district prison. Also, the cases of cattle theft have increased, he said.

The MP accused the Congress leaders of trying to fool people by making allegation against the Union government in the Kasturirangan report issue. The State government did not submit its report to the Union government before the stipulated time, he claimed.

The BJP will fight against the projects which are detrimental to nature, he added. District BJP President Pratap Simha Nayak, General Secretary Sanjiv Mathandoor, former Minister Krishna J Palemar, former legislators K Jayaram Shetty and Rukmaya Poojary were present.
