Gujarat cops vindicated, says Vanzara

Former Deputy Inspector General D G Vanzara said Headley’s testimony on Ishrat Jahan was “very important” and “vindicates” Gujarat police’s stand that she was a terrorist.

The 62-year-old former IPS officer, who faces allegations of extra-judicial killings, said: “She was from the Lashkar-e-Toiba...she was a LeT suicide bomber....it is told in the open court.”

Vanzara, who was DCP with city crime branch when the encounter took place, was granted bail in the fake encounter case by a Mumbai court in February last year. Since he is barred by the court from entering Gujarat, he resides in Mumbai at present.

“The encounter was politicised and taken in another direction. Encounters were genuine but cases against Gujarat police were fake,” Vanzara told reporters here. “The lie that she was an innocent college girl, has been nailed with Headley deposition,” he added.

Agencies and people claiming fake encounter should know that such claims are to be proved or disproved by the court, he said.

“A charge sheet is not the final word,” he said when pointed out that he was held guilty of a fake encounter in the charge sheet. Asked what happened that day, he said the matter was subjudice.
“Of the four terrorists killed, talk revolves only around Ishrat,” he said.

Saying that he has all respect and regards for Ishrat being a female, he wondered “what was she doing with the terrorists two of whom were from Pakistan.”

“There were inputs from Central agencies that they were terrorists,” he said when asked how was he sure that Ishrat was a terrorist.

When pointed out that Headley was a double agent and terrorist, he said: “It does not matter whether he is a single agent or double agent...this statement is before the court and it is legally acceptable.”

He said he has been a victim of “political conspiracy” but did not elaborate.
