Kerala bids farewell to O N V Kurup

Kerala bid farewell to the Jnanpith-winning poet and lyricist ONV Kurup, one of the most iconic literary figures, as his mortal remains were cremated here on Monday.

The iconic 84-year-old poet, popularly known as ONV, had died on Saturday due to age-related ailments.

ONV’s body was carried from his home to the city crematorium in Thycaud – named Shanthi Kavaadam (gateway to peace) by the poet himself – where the prominent political leaders including Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Leader of the Opposition V S Achuthanandan, CPI(M) Politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI(M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan paid their respects to the departed soul.

Musical tributeAs the last rites were performed with the full state honours, a group of vocalists led by renowned musician Dr K Omanakutty performed a musical tribute.

 People from all walks of life paid their respect to the departed poet at VJT Hall here on Sunday as well on Monday at his house.

House adjournedThe Kerala Legislative Assembly on Monday adjourned after paying respects to ONV. Chief Minister Chandy said the government would initiate installation of statue of the poet in Thiruvananthapuram.

A recipient of Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan, ONV has won the Kendra Sahitya Akademi as well as Kerala Sahitya Akademi awards, too. The Left-leaning poet was hugely popular among the film lyricist and collaborated extensively with the Kerala People’s Arts Club, an iconic theatre troupe from the 1950s which reflected the turmoil and hope that defined the age of Kerala’s social renaissance.
